Priestley, Joseph (1733-1804): Short Biography – Priestley, Joseph (1733-1804): Priestley was an English presbyterian minister and chemist. He was, we see in Chambers, “a pioneer in the chemistry of gases, and one of the discovers of oxygen.” He met Benjamin Franklin who was to supply Priestley with books which assisted him in the writing of, in 1767, The History of Electricity. In 1772 he was appointed to the French Academy of Sciences; and, in 1780, the St. Petersburg Academy. Priestley, as a minister (dissenting) was much concerned with the human condition and what if any steps that might be taken to relieve suffering, and, was to express his views in his writings: he wrote a reply to Burke’s Reflections on the French Revolution.
